Is Your Child Doing Good in School?

from:

What do we mean by student motivation? Why is it important? What is its impact to students? Student motivation is generally defined as the eagerness or desire of the students to join in the class discussion or any activity in the school. It is associated with the underlying principles that cause the students to be involved or not to be involved with academic activities. The student motivation goals, particularly the factors that affect them may vary from case to case basis.

Generally speaking, student motivation is categorized into two groups. These two categories are identified as extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. What's the difference between the two?

Well, from the phrase itself you can easily spot the difference. Extrinsic motivation differs from intrinsic motivation in the sense that the former pertains to a student that is enthusiastic about the learning process because he or she can get a reward or to keep away from any penalty while the latter is a kind of motivation that is concerned with a student who is eager to learn and is dedicated to achieve his or her own personal goals. This kind of student takes every activity as a challenge and is very excited to finish a certain task assigned to him or her.

What factors shape student motivation? How do they affect the students' lives? There are so many factors that influence motivation among students. The major factors are the home and the school environment. The home is the place where the child first develops his mind-set for learning. A home where there is so much love, self-esteem and competency instilled in the minds of the child is a good foundation of student motivation. It is a must for parents to nourish their child's willingness to learn by encouraging them to ask questions.

Another factor is school. It serves as the second home of the child. It has also a great influence on the behavior of the child. The child starts to develop his or her beliefs about school-related concerns and activities. The teachers are the ones that act as the second parent of the child. They play vital roles in shaping the student's attitude about learning.

Other factors include the developmental changes that the students are experiencing. And also included in these student motivational factors is the student's interest on the lesson being discussed in the classroom, their self-worth as well as determination.

How do you motivate students to learn? Effective learning in the classroom greatly depends on the performance of the teacher on how to secure the interest of the students. The teachers should motivate their students to become energetic and self-sufficient learners. Here are some things that a teacher can do to encourage students:

- Provide some positive criticisms that the students are performing well in the classroom.

- Give assignments that are within the level of the student's ability.

- Support the students in their quest in finding the value of education.

- Create a classroom atmosphere that is conducive to good learning experience.

- Let the students feel that they belong to the group and they are well appreciated.

- It's also of the essence to make your students know what they will do in order to achieve their specific goals.

- Encourage social interaction among your students.
