Building Self-Confidence to Children: How Can Nursing Students Provide Help

from:

Self-confidence is an attitude where individuals posses a positive, at the same time realistic view on their situation as well as life itself. This is a good character to have since self-confidence allows individuals to trust other people, execute plans effectively, communicate with others correctly, integrate with people properly, and having the capacity to get things done.

However, among children, especially during the teenage years, self-confidence along with self-esteem can suddenly drop. Reasons for this range from misguided realizations in life, past experiences, race, gender, to physical appearance.

When this happens, the effect is immeasurable. Lack of self-confidence could misdirect children to feel what is not to be felt and think what is not to be thought. For this, children must be helped as early as possible. They need someone who can redirect them back on the right track and rebuild the self-confidence they lost. They need a person whom they are comfortable sharing their problems with and a person who can understand every word they speak.

Among many groups, one that could provide aid to build self-confidence among children is the group of nursing students. As long as they are skilled and properly trained on therapy, nursing students can provide hands on and individualized instructions on how to build self-confidence among children.

Why are they effective?

As was mentioned, children especially those in their teens, need someone who can understand them. And sometimes, they don't feel opening up to older people such as teachers and even parents. For nursing students are generally college students, their age is relatively close to these children. Seeking help from them would be a lot easier and more open than seeking help to older person. Children who lack self-confidence have the tendency to further drift from their condition if they could not earn the right courage to open up what's on their mind. And forcing them to talk to someone they are not comfortable talking with would even make it worst.

Nursing students can act as an older sister or brother to them. Most importantly, they can help the children without forcing them to open up. Take note that teenagers who lack self-confidence sometimes do not have the skill to communicate with others. And the only people who can understand them are those who are close to their age. A friend who can lend both of his ears would mean a lot to children who want to be heard. Nursing students can do that best. They are young, idealistic, and enthusiast and they seem to develop the urge to help other people, especially the children younger than them.

Sometimes, you will never know what are the root causes for children who lack self-confidence until they open up. But if one of the root causes is the people close to them, you can never expect children to open up to these people. Thus, children need someone who is not involved. Nursing student can be one of them.

Of course, the help would not take effect if the helper itself lacks self-confidence. So, it is important the each nursing student who is trying to help children with self-confidence issue must posses the right character. Role models if you would like to say it, nursing student can provide aid to revive the self-confidence these children once have.
